Project-Based Learning at ESEI Business School:
Bridging Classroom Learning with Real-World Challenges
In the ever-evolving landscape of business and technology, universities are constantly seeking innovative teaching methodologies to prepare their students for real-world challenges. ESEI International Business School in Barcelona has been at the forefront of this educational advancement with its Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology, providing students with hands-on experience and practical skills that set them apart in the job market.
What is Project-Based Learning Methodology?
Project-Based Learning is an innovative educational approach that empowers students to acquire knowledge and skills by actively engaging in real-world business challenges. At ESEI, PBL is defined as “an approach to learning that enables you to work with others on projects that are meaningful to you and your career goals.” This methodology forms the cornerstone of ESEI’s master programmes in English, offering students unparalleled opportunities for practical skills development.
Benefits of Project-Based Learning at ESEI
The PBL methodology at ESEI offers numerous advantages to students:
- Enhances critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Fosters collaboration and communication skills
- Improves student engagement and motivation
- Develops practical knowledge applicable to real-world situations
- Builds a professional network through industry partnerships
- Boosts creativity and innovation in addressing business challenges
- Prepares students for the global job market
- Provides hands-on experience by working with real companies, from startups to well-established ones
- Encourages cross-cultural understanding in a diverse environment
"PBL links students to real-world situations. The concept is for students to engage in learning and evaluation that mirrors the experiences of professionals in the workforce. This approach allows them to develop and refine essential relevant skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork."
Carlota Estera, ESEI Co-director
ESEI's Unique Approach to Project-Based Learning
At ESEI Business School, PBL is integrated into the curriculum to ensure students gain practical experience while studying in Spain. The school’s partnerships with local and international companies in Barcelona provide students with opportunities to work on real-world projects, applying theoretical knowledge to actual business scenarios.
Real-World Business Challenges
ESEI’s commitment to PBL is evident in its collaborations with real businesses. Last semester, ESEI partnered with several companies to provide students with a unique platform to apply their skills in digital marketing. One such project involved collaborating with Tres en Social, a social cooperative; Actorio, a software as a service company catering to Amazon sellers across Europe; and EPA Link, a trading company, bringing products from Spain and Portugal to Vietnam and the rest of Southeast Asia.
These partnerships allow students to tackle genuine business challenges. For instance, Tres en Social was looking to expand its brand awareness and establish a stronger digital presence. Actario, on the other hand, was aspiring to increase their client base across various European markets, while EPA Link needed help in optimizing the use of various social media platforms to publicise the brand.

Practical Skills Development
Through these projects, students at ESEI Business School hone their practical skills in various areas, including digital marketing, data analysis, and strategy development. They engaged in in-depth discussions with the company representatives, assessed market conditions, and presented their findings and solutions.
“ We received very professional communication from the students. I learned a lot about digital marketing and what it means to get a digital marketing strategy,” shared Marieke Piepenburg, co-founder of 3In Social.
This hands-on approach yields tangible results. As Actorio co-founder Marco Lombardo notes, “The students came prepared with a comprehensive digital marketing strategy. They understood our needs and developed solutions that we could implement immediately.”
The Impact of Project-Based Learning
The impact of PBL on both students and partnering companies is profound. Students gain invaluable real-world experience, while companies benefit from fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.
Student Perspective
Students find the PBL methodology particularly engaging and beneficial. International MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship student Adelina Iovanesc values hands-on experience with the clients.
“ I think ESEI is one of the few universities that actually takes this approach. Not only do you gain the knowledge and expertise, possibly the opportunity to put that on your resume and add it to your portfolio, Especially for those that want to build portfolio careers…you also get to network with people,” she notes.

Another Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship student, Constantin Blum whose background is in the hospitality industry appreciates working with a company in a different industry as it adds to his experience.
“ It was really cool to be working with a real company because it was a company in an industry that we don’t usually work for. And I think the experiences we got were very valuable, just because we got to see a completely different aspect of marketing that we hadn’t really thought of before. And it challenged us in a way that I think we hadn’t been challenged like that yet,” he explains.

Company Perspective
Partnering companies also reap significant benefits from ESEI’s PBL approach. The impact of the students’ projects on the companies was profound. Companies receive innovative solutions to their challenges and gain fresh perspectives from the next generation of business leaders.
“We are also expecting that when implementing the strategies we can raise [the] number of people that are actually signing up for our projects, for visitors on our sites, on social networks, and so on,” Marieke says.

Study Abroad Experience in Barcelona
Choosing to study abroad at ESEI International Business School offers more than just academic growth. Barcelona’s vibrant business ecosystem provides an ideal backdrop for students to immerse themselves in a multicultural environment, fostering cross-cultural understanding and networking opportunities.
Moreover, ESEI offers a range of master programmes in English, designed to meet the demands of the global job market. The PBL methodology ensures that graduates are not only well-versed in theory but also equipped with the practical skills necessary to excel in their careers.
The Role of Faculty in Project-Based Learning
In the PBL model, ESEI faculty members play a crucial role as facilitators of learning. They guide the students through the learning process and help them achieve their goals. They create the project briefs and oversee the progress that teams are making week after week, with regular check-in points.
Digital marketing Strategy Professor Albert Pallares, who teaches both Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Master in Digital Transformation in Business students, shares his experience in guiding the students through the entire process: “ For the final project, we have had a really interesting experience because [the students] have been contacting with real companies that had needs in order to improve their digital marketing strategies. These students contacted them, they understood those needs, and then they developed a whole digital marketing plan… I think this is an amazing experience because it cannot get more real than what it is,” he asserts.
This approach transforms the traditional teacher-student dynamic. An important part of the role of the facilitator in this approach is building connections with students and engaging them on a personal level.

Prepared for the Future
As companies continue to seek innovative solutions in various fields, including digital marketing, the role of education in preparing future professionals becomes increasingly critical. ESEI’s PBL methodology provides a unique learning platform where students engage with real-world challenges, equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to excel in their careers.
ESEI International Business School’s Project-Based Learning Methodology stands out as a model for practical education in a modern academic landscape. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, ESEI ensures that its graduates are not only educated but truly prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow’s business world.
This innovative approach to education positions ESEI graduates at the forefront of their chosen fields, ready to make meaningful contributions to the global business landscape.
