International Women's Day 2023: Celebrating Women's Achievements and Advocating for Gender Equality

International Women’s day 2023: History

The first International Women’s Day was observed on February 28, 1909, in New York City, when the Socialist Party of America designated this day in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in which women protested against their working conditions.

In 1910, the second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist, proposed that a day be set aside each year to recognize women’s contributions to society and advocate for their rights.

The proposal was unanimously adopted by the conference, and the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland on March 19, 1911. The United Nations recognized IWD in 1975, and it has been celebrated globally ever since.

The Theme for International Women’s Day 2023:

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th every year to recognize women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements and advocate for gender equality. The United Nations (UN) has announced the theme for IWD 2023 as “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.” This theme aims to recognize and celebrate women and girls’ contributions to technology and online education and explore the impact of the digital gender gap on inequality.

Celebrating Women’s Achievements in Technology and Online Education:

Despite these challenges, women and girls are making significant contributions to technology and online education. Women are breaking barriers and stereotypes in fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, and are creating innovative solutions to address social and environmental challenges. Online education also provides opportunities for women and girls to access education and training, empowering them to build skills and pursue their career aspirations.

Embracing Equity: Challenging Stereotypes and Promoting Inclusion:

The International Women’s Day website has chosen the theme #EmbraceEquity for IWD 2023. This theme seeks to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and promote inclusion. By embracing equity, we can work towards creating a more just and equal world for everyone, regardless of gender. This involves addressing the digital gender gap, promoting women’s leadership and participation in technology and innovation, and advocating for policies and initiatives that promote gender equality.

International Women’s Day 2023 provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate women and girls’ contributions to technology and online education, as well as the ongoing challenges they face. By addressing the digital gender gap, embracing equity, and promoting inclusion, we can work towards creating a more equitable and just world for everyone.
