Arcio, originally from Mozambique, recently completed his MBA in International Relations and International Business at ESEI International Business School in Barcelona. His journey demonstrates how studying abroad can foster academic growth, professional development, and personal transformation through cultural immersion.
A Global Academic Journey
Arcio’s path to Barcelona has been truly international. Born and raised in Mozambique, he moved to South Africa at the age of 15 to complete his high schooling. He then pursued an undergraduate degree in International Business at Brunel University in London from 2019 to 2022. After a period back in Mozambique, he decided to take the next step in his education and move to Barcelona to study at ESEI.
Reflecting on his multicultural background, Arcio said,
“My exposure to different cultures from a young age made it easy for me to adapt to life in Barcelona. I would say putting myself in a situation where I had to open up to new cultures helped me adapt quickly.” He also shared, “I speak English and Portuguese fluently, and I can speak Spanish because it is similar to Portuguese. It didn’t take me long to adjust to the culture here.”
His decision to pursue an MBA at ESEI was motivated by his interest in global markets and international affairs.
“I have always liked global experiences, global markets, and anything to do with international affairs. I was always drawn to a programme that had a global perspective,” he explained.
Learning Through Collaboration
Arcio found ESEI’s project-based learning approach to be a significant change from his undergrad experience in London. “Everything in London was more individual. At ESEI, I learned to work in teams with people from different cultures and ways of thinking. It was a very good learning curve for me,” he said.
He highlighted the benefits of working in groups on real-life tasks, adding,
“Not everyone is good with tests or individual projects, so learning to work within a team is very valuable. It also improved my public speaking and technical skills in a professional environment.”
Experiencing Life in Barcelona
Studying in Barcelona offered Arcio an enriching combination of international culture and Spanish lifestyle.
“London is very high intensity and fast-paced, whereas Barcelona is much more relaxed. Everything here is chilled, which was a new experience for me,” he said.
He also enjoyed connecting with students from across the globe:
“I met so many people from different countries and cultures. Being in Barcelona gave me the opportunity to experience Spanish culture while learning from a very international environment.”
Personal Growth Through Studying Abroad
Studying abroad strengthened Arcio’s independence and openness to new experiences.
“It gave me a sense of independence. I can now handle everything myself, from basic daily tasks to complex challenges,” he shared.
He reflected on how living abroad shaped his mindset:
“It made me more open to understanding different people and cultures. I am now ready to challenge myself anywhere in the world, whether in Europe, America, or Asia.”
Advice for Future Students
Drawing from his experience, Arcio shared practical advice for students considering studying abroad:
- Do your research – “Make sure you understand the requirements of the school and everything about studying abroad. Preparation is key.”
- Step out of your comfort zone – “Be ready to live in a different environment and embrace new experiences. It’s not bad to leave your comfort zone.”
- Build the right support network – “Make sure the people you surround yourself with are people you can rely on during your studies.”
- Take the risk – “A Master’s degree opens doors for so many opportunities. Don’t be scared to take the risk of studying abroad.”
