If you are a non-EU international student planning to study at ESEI Business School in Barcelona, one of the first things you will need after arriving in Spain is your TIE card – Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero. This residence card proves your legal stay in Spain and allows you to live, study and work part-time while completing your studies.
The process can seem complicated at first, but with the right preparation, it is quite straightforward. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you understand how to apply for your TIE card in Barcelona.
What is the TIE Card?
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is an identity card issued to non-EU citizens who plan to stay in Spain for more than six months. It contains your photograph, NIE number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero), address and visa type.
You will need it for many everyday processes such as opening a bank account, signing a rental contract or registering with local services.
Who Needs a TIE Card in Spain?
You must apply for a TIE card if:
- You are a non-EU or non-EEA citizen staying in Spain for more than 180 days.
- You hold a student visa or residence permit.
- You plan to work part-time or have an internship while studying in Spain.
EU and EEA students only need to register for a Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión, not a TIE.
1. Get Your Empadronamiento Certificate
Before applying for your TIE, you must register your local address in Barcelona through the Empadronamiento (residency registration).
You can do this at your local Ajuntament (City Hall).
You will need:
- Passport
- Signed rental contract or a housing certificate from your landlord
- Completed application form
Once registered, you will receive an Empadronamiento certificate, which you must bring to your TIE appointment.
👉 You can book an appointment online through Barcelona City Council’s website.
2. Book Your TIE Appointment (Cita Previa)
All TIE applications are done by appointment only. Go to the official Spanish government website for appointments.
Choose:
- Provincia: Barcelona
- Trámite: Policía – Toma de huella (Expedición de tarjeta)
The appointments are released on the website every Thursday at 15:00 but they go fast so be prepared!
3. Prepare Your Documents
Before your appointment, make sure you have the following documents ready:
- EX-17 form (TIE application form) – available on the Spanish Immigration website.
- Passport and photocopy (all pages showing your personal data and visa).
- Visa and entry stamp.
- Empadronamiento certificate.
- Proof of university enrolment (from ESEI).
- Proof of financial means and health insurance.
- Passport-size photo (white background, EU standard).
- Payment receipt for the TIE fee (Form 790-012).
You can pay the 790-012 form at any Spanish bank before your appointment. The fee is usually around €16–€20.
4. Attend Your Appointment
On the day of your appointment, arrive early and bring all your documents neatly organised. The officer will:
- Check your documents.
- Take your fingerprints.
- Confirm your address and personal details.
You will receive a resguardo (receipt) confirming your TIE request. Keep this safe, as it proves your legal stay while waiting for the card.
5. Collect Your TIE Card
Your card is usually ready within 3–5 weeks. You can collect it from the same police station where you submitted your application.
Check your resguardo for instructions on when and how to collect it. When you go to pick it up, bring:
- Your passport
- Your resguardo (receipt)
Your TIE card is valid for the same period as your residence or study permit, usually one year for students.
Tips for a Smooth Application Process
- Book appointments early: Slots fill up quickly, especially in September and October.
- Double-check your forms: Incomplete or incorrect documents can delay the process.
- Keep photocopies: Always keep copies of everything you submit.
- Ask for support: ESEI’s admissions and student services team can guide you through each step.
Final Thoughts
Getting your TIE card is one of the first important steps after arriving in Spain. It allows you to live, study and work legally while you enjoy your time at ESEI and settle into life in Barcelona.
With the right preparation and guidance, the process becomes much easier to manage, and you will soon have your card in hand, ready to start your studies with confidence.
