When Serbian student Una Jovanović first visited Barcelona as a teenager, she instantly fell in love with the city. That first trip with her best friend planted a seed that stayed with her for years. She knew she would one day return to live and study in the city that had captured her heart. Today, that dream has become reality. Una is completing her Master’s in International Relations and International Business at ESEI Business School, while also learning Spanish and gaining professional experience in her adopted home.
Why ESEI? Finding the Right Fit for International Ambitions
“When I started looking for a Master’s programme, I wanted an institution that offered modern knowledge, experienced professors, and a dynamic learning environment,” Una explains. “It was also important for me to find a programme connected to international relations, and I found all of that at ESEI.”
ESEI’s project-based learning approach was a new experience for Una. “It was my first time studying this way, and it completely changed my approach to learning. I have developed my ability to adapt to different personality types and to collaborate with people from a variety of cultures and perspectives. That has been one of the most valuable parts of my studies.”
She also appreciates how closely the courses link to global topics.
“Everything we discuss in class is relevant and up to date, which is so important in a Master’s in International Relations. On top of that, I have met so many wonderful classmates from around the world. ESEI has made my first year in Barcelona truly special.”
Learning Spanish and Feeling at Home
Alongside her studies at ESEI, Una is also learning Spanish at Freeda Language Space, which she considers an essential part of her experience in Barcelona. “At first, I was worried it might become too much, since I study for my Master’s in English and have Spanish lessons every morning. But when you start understanding people in everyday situations, or when you can complete an entire conversation in Spanish, it feels incredible,” she says.
For Una, learning Spanish has been a key part of integrating into local life. “If you plan to live here longer, it is important to dedicate time to learning the language. It shows respect for the culture and makes daily life much easier. Now I feel that I belong here much more than when I first arrived. My Spanish classes at Freeda also give me a deeper insight into Catalan culture, which helps me understand the community and lifestyle around me.”
Gaining Experience Through Her Internship at Freeda
Una’s connection with Freeda goes beyond the classroom. She has also completed a Sales and Marketing internship there, which gave her valuable insight into the Spanish professional environment.
“Even though my Master’s focuses on International Relations, my internship allowed me to learn completely new skills and understand how businesses operate in Spain,” she explains. “It also helps me practise languages and get used to working with people from different countries and cultures. Since everyone uses their second language, I feel that ESEI has already prepared me well for this experience.”
Balancing work and study requires discipline, but Una approached it with enthusiasm. “My secret recipe is to make sure that what I do feels meaningful. When you enjoy your commitments, it becomes easier to stay organised and motivated. Of course, sometimes the sunny Barcelona weather tempts you to relax outside, but I try to allow myself small breaks to enjoy it.”
Life, Challenges and Advice for Living in Barcelona
For Una, Barcelona is more than just a place to study. It is a city that continually teaches her how to live in the moment and embrace new experiences. “What amazes me is the energy of the people and their way of life. I learn from them how to slow down and appreciate simple things. There is always something happening here, from festivals to cultural events, so it is very difficult to feel lonely.”
Finding balance has been one of her biggest challenges. “Barcelona always invites you to explore, which makes time management a bit harder,” she admits. “But every full day is worth it because I am building a life in my dream city. Each challenge I face now brings me closer to feeling completely at home here.”
Her advice to future international students is honest and encouraging. “Enjoy the process. Your twenties can be full of uncertainty, but time will not wait for us to become braver. If you have the opportunity to spend time in Barcelona, take it. Enjoy every day, because no matter how long you stay, each year abroad is unique. Make it an adventure to remember.”
A Journey That Reflects the ESEI Spirit
Una’s story captures what ESEI stands for: curiosity, adaptability and the courage to pursue one’s goals beyond borders. Through hands-on learning, international collaboration and a human-centred approach, ESEI helps students turn their ambitions into reality.
Una’s journey is a testament to what happens when passion meets purpose. Her experience reminds future students that studying abroad is not only about academic growth, but also about personal discovery, cultural understanding and building a life you truly love.
