Best Beaches Near Barcelona for Students
One of the genuine privileges of studying in Barcelona is that the Mediterranean is right there. Within minutes of the city centre you can be on the beach, and within an hour you can be on some of the most beautiful coastline in Europe. Here is a guide to the best beaches near Barcelona for students, covering everything from the closest city options to the best day trip destinations.
Barceloneta
Barceloneta is the most central and most famous of Barcelona’s city beaches, sitting at the end of the old fishing neighbourhood of the same name in the Born and Gòtic area. It is easily reached on foot from the city centre or by metro to Barceloneta station, and it is completely free.
The beach is lively, social and well-equipped, with volleyball nets, outdoor showers, sun lounger hire and a long stretch of promenade lined with bars and restaurants. It is the go-to beach for most students in Barcelona and for good reason: the combination of easy access, great atmosphere and the ability to go for a swim and be back in class within an hour makes it hard to beat.

Mar Bella
A short walk or bike ride further along the coast from Barceloneta, Mar Bella is quieter, more local and particularly popular among the student, young professional and expat community. It has a more relaxed atmosphere than Barceloneta, a nudist section if that is your preference, and excellent outdoor fitness facilities and table tennis tables along the promenade.
Mar Bella is also close to Poblenou, one of Barcelona’s most creative and international neighbourhoods, making it easy to combine a morning at the beach with an afternoon exploring one of the city’s most interesting areas.
Badalona
Just north of Barcelona along the coast, Badalona is one of the city’s best kept secrets for beach-going. Reachable by metro in around 20 minutes on the L2 line, it has longer, wider and significantly less crowded beaches than Barceloneta, with clear water and a more authentic local feel.
Badalona is particularly good on weekdays when the city beaches can feel busy. If you want a proper beach day without the crowds, this is where to go.
Castelldefels
Around 20 minutes south of Barcelona by train from Passeig de Gràcia or Sants, Castelldefels is one of the most popular beach day trips for students. It has a long stretch of wide sandy beach, calm shallow water that is good for swimming and paddleboarding, and a relaxed resort town atmosphere.
The beach at Castelldefels is significantly less crowded than Barceloneta even on busy summer weekends, and the train journey is cheap and straightforward. It is an easy half-day trip and a great option when you want a proper beach day rather than a quick dip.
Sitges
Sitges is around 40 minutes south of Barcelona by train from Passeig de Gràcia and is widely considered one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Catalonia. The town has a charming old centre, excellent beaches, a famously welcoming atmosphere and a great selection of restaurants and bars.
The beaches at Sitges are cleaner and calmer than the city beaches, and the town itself is worth exploring beyond the seafront. Further north along the coast, the Costa Brava is one of the most stunning stretches of Mediterranean coastline in Europe. Towns like Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell, Cadaqués and Begur have crystal-clear water, rocky coves and a beauty that is genuinely different from the sandy city beaches.

Practical Tips for Beach Days in Barcelona
Getting to the city beaches is easiest by metro or on foot. For Castelldefels and Sitges, use the Rodalies commuter train network from Passeig de Gràcia or Sants station. Our guide to transport in Barcelona covers all the options in detail.
Go early in summer. July and August mornings before 11am are significantly more comfortable than the peak afternoon heat, and the beaches are far less crowded. Bring water, sunscreen and more sunscreen. The Mediterranean sun is strong and the beach reflects it back at you.
Most of Barcelona’s beaches have free outdoor showers for rinsing off. Bring a reusable bag, pick up your rubbish and leave the beach as you found it.
